Learn to Row
In 2019 we are offering learn to row courses for adults lasting 4 weeks at a cost of only £70. We ask you to commit only £10 prior to the first session, the balance being payable prior to session 2.
Course start dates are Sunday 7th April, Sunday 9th June and Sunday 1st September.
10 hours of 1:1 attention on Sunday mornings from 10:00am. You will have an opportunity to meet members of the club who will be supporting you; learn initially on an indoor rowing machine, then in a quad sculling boat on the water. By the end of the course we will have you racing in a double scull!
Our club coach is Rob Kay, who has over 30 years of coaching experience and able to train you up to GB squad standard!
If you then choose to join the club, (pro rata for the rest of the calendar year) you will continue to be supported and coached in a single scull and crew boats.
Once you have passed your “single sculling test” and completed a capsize drill in a swimming pool, you will then be able to take boats out on your own or in groups with others.
We have an active racing group and we offer coached sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 07:45am (and Friday evenings in the summer). The racing athletes also train on land several times a week.
If you are more inclined towards rowing for recreation and pleasure, this is the club for you - we have many small groups of scullers who meet for company at various times and days of the week; once experienced, you may scull alone.
We have a full calendar of club events - racing (both against other clubs on our river and further afield, and fun races just for our own club), recreational outings, pub rows, social events and work parties.
For More Information
If you would like to register your interest in a learn to row course, please email the club secretary on email@example.com or pop along to the club on a Sunday morning at 1000 for a guided tour.
If you are already a rower or sculler, perhaps having rowed at university or in the past, then do get in touch with Shelagh Tubby, the Club Captain, on firstname.lastname@example.org for a guided tour and a trial outing.
Indoor racking for private boats can be made available to new club members. Our single scull racking fee is currently £100 a year.
Indoor Rowing Instruction
With Jonathan Drake, author of the e-book, Rowing from a Holistic Perspective
Jonathan teaches the use of the indoor rower with sculling in mind. His sessions are suitable for:
- Novices: learn good habits about proper body movement away from the shell – with its added challenges of balancing the boat and manipulating the oars
- Seasoned scullers: it’s never too late to undo movement patterns which risk/cause injury. Increase your pleasure in mastering the skills of sculling and go faster.
YBC members can claim approximately 15% discount on lessons of which 15% is donated to YBC funds. So, it costs £25 for a one hour session, one-to-one, of which £5 goes to club funds (one-to-two, £36 or £18 each, inc £7 donation to YBC).
